I need to get some info on a 700r4. I was told by a guy that is local here that i should find one out of a 88 or newer car.More splines on the input shaft? Now will my 85 drive line fit in a 88 tranny?
You still should find an 88 or newer trans. GM improved the lubrication to several parts that were experiencing problems in 88, so find an 88. You may have to use the tail shaft off your stock housing and maybe the output shaft of the origanl tranny, but it will make for a better tranny using an 88 case.
I was told all Vette 700r4's were 30 spline. I have '86 and I just rebuilt the tranny myself and can confirm it was 30 spline, VIN on the tranny confirmed it was the original tranny. I'm not arguing the other upgrades. Which include valve body and pump.

I'll second this entire post. I just had the R4 out of my '85, and it is a 30 spline unit.
