Mine were 8mm (possibly 10mm) if im not mistaken. However they were not a thread, it was just a nut that dug into the plastic tabs that go through the hood and made its own thread. It also had sticky crap on it. The rear gas door has actual threads.
I had fun replacing this emblem just recently. The nuts fall off into the hood when you are removing them. Had to invest in a Telescopic Magnetic Retriever (Autocraft AC 682) which I found at Advance Auto Parts for $10 to fish them out. Worked great. When I was shopping for this tool, I found that they also sold a pack off thread cut nuts (Dorman - Help Thread Cutting Nut Assortment - Universal -- part Number 45384) for $4 that included the nuts need to install the new emblem. This was after I visited my local Chevy dealer and found that these nuts are no longer available and even their body shop did not have any. Make sure that you tape the nut the your nut driver when installing the nuts onto the new emblem or you will be using the magnetic tool a second time. I had even more fun with the one on the gas door which has two nuts but also has some type of adhesive holding it one. I found that the only way to safely remove the emblem was to remove the door and work on it on my work bench. I found that a plastic bondo spreader worked the best to break the old emblem free.

OK you guys.
All that is needed is a small dab of "gorilla snot" or that sticky puddy the general uses to seal off panels and attach water shields.
Apply the puddy inside your 10mm socket to hold the nut. Once tight, the socket is easily extracted.
You can also use a small piece of masking tape.
