i have a 1985 with auot trans and stock dana 36 with 308 gears. i was told that there is a thick and thin ring gear. in the 36 and you must match the gears with the carrier . i have a chance to pick up a set of 355's, thick ring gear. is my stock ring gear a thick or thin. what fits what. can i find out with out taking the rear apart
If I understand this correct.....the Dana with a 2:54 carrier has a thick gear and the dana with a 3:07 has a thin gear. I am sure somebody will post a better description...
dana 36 with 308 gears.

From the factory there are no " thick" or "thin "gears.
The thick or thin part only comes into play if you want to install new gears on a carrier
that originally had a different series gearset and you don't wish to install the correct carrier
to suit the factory (thin ) gearset that it is matched to
