Looks like a nice piece. Can you look down and see the condition of the cam gear?

Got some light over the dist hole. Hard to see it super clear but from what I can tell looks Ok. has some type of slight shine/wear on the gear but doesnt appear worn down or knife edged. Ill pull the distributor at 20 miles that will tell me everything I need to know.

Could pull the intake but feeling lazy right about now. Maybe I will this weekend who knows got a week before the piece comes-10 min job anyway. Pulling it and dumping some diesel fuel in teh valley and through the heads couldnt hurt as far as cleaning everything .

Going to take a gamble that it was the gear rather than endplay being off I have a hard time believing thats the case.

If the cam gear is bad, I think it can be machined down by a competent machinist and an iron gear pressed on. Should be less than a new camshaft.

Just had the oil filter cut open

1 teeny piece of something metal. Not sure what it is

Other than that 0 bearing material silver powder nothing
Sounds like the bottom end is probably healthy

Those Wix filters trap everything the element is 10x better than any fram or other brands Ive seen.

So at this point sounds like worst case scenario is this new gear wears some prematurely and the cam gets pulled/sent out to have a reg gear installed and its playtime. Better than a teardown

Total count so far
Miles 35
Qts used 21 not counting the 7 I just bought.

Right before the dist was pulled put some in and ran it for a few minutes.
Got a paint strainer and the makeshift one you see in hopes...
(btw dont use a Tshirt gets lint in the oil if you reuse.)

Anyway more dust (expected). May take a few times as said. Less than before but still there.

Noticeable diff between the cheap gear and the $60 one.

Dist will go in tomorrow just throwing some cheap 10/30 in this time around wont even bother with the filter think most this stuff goes rigth through it anyway.

New AMPCO-45 gear on teh right
Old on the left.

Gears on new have more spacing between them than the imposter
Look past the wear just at the bottom. In person its obvious. Coupled with no end play on the gear (binding) this didnt have a chance. Cam gear looks good hopefully it did its job

Throw the dist in tomorrow run it for 15-20 min pull it and hope for the best, dump oil again.

Learning experience here

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ACF-10456413/ Needs to be reamed to .500 hole if using aftermarket dist.

yes, just have to make some lines. At that point why not a cooler, too.

Down the road when $ permits.

At some point Ill have to pull it as the rear main has a slow drip since first startup (think all 2 pc rms leak new/old lol).

Could trim the flange on the scattershield and solve the problem but that could create an issue with debris getting out should the clutch or FW have a failure.
Never ends huh?

That is a good question for elaboration in this thread.

When I bought my custom cam from Bullet, I asked about Billet gears. Because I'd read so many problems with dizzy gears and what not, I asked for the exact same thing as a factory car used. IIRC, that was cast iron. Billet must be harder. I also assume bronze is softer. As such, I wonder if billet/bronze setups wear much faster...and why they'd be selected over a traditional setup.

Can you look down and see the condition of the cam gea
Got in there with a tiny LED and the cam gear looks great. No damage I can see

So did I. Someone didnt take good notes.
Cam was shipped directly to the machinist had him degree it in.
Never saw it myself no need to.

I also assume bronze is softer.
Yup

As such, I wonder if billet/bronze setups wear much faster...and why they'd be selected over a traditional setup.
They wear faster. Some charge more to press a different gear on some dont wanna pay it.

Wasnt the case here. If theres a continued issue Ill talk to Ron Iskendarian myself;hopefully this takes care of things in no rush to tear this apart

They make a nice product but someones lines were crossed.Wasnt til the machinist said "come get it" he mentioned Id need a bronze dist gear. I was pissed but too late.
"No returns on custom cams but for $180 we will fix it" is what I heard (from the Isky salesguy). Still havent recieved the 2 other items I paid for a YEAR ago. Service is crap but that happens when you deal with hired help.
Used to only deal with the old man Ed or Ron.

At this point Im just going to fix it and move on dont have time for drama.
For now...
It will work out one way or the other.

its not about money or finger pointing its about getting it right the FIRST time

I'm running a solid roller in my 454 SBC F-car mini ram/TPI. I'm using a comp composite gear, no problems yet.
I was told to run a standard PSI and volume oil pump, which I am, with a 5/8s pickup tube and shimed it to give me a extra 10 psi.
I had to turn a shim out of tubing to get the gear to work with the tiny F-car shaft but other than that all is well with it so far.
