I recently bought a 1987 that has a squeaky serpentine belt. I tried belt dressing twice so far. The first time it worked but the second time the squeak got louder. The belt does not squeak at lower RPM's but as soon as I step on the gas it does. The belt itself looks like it is in good condition. Am I wasting my money by buying a new belt?
I put a new belt on my 86 last fall and had the sme problem. I found the new belt, even though it was the correct belt by number was too long. I purchased the correct belt from GM, no more problems. It was also ratteling when the AC was on, the belt was so long the tensioner was slapping the stop. The correct belt was almost an inch shorter than the non OEM I had installed.
As I said I just bought the car and the belt looks like it is practically new so I do not know when it was changed last. I was thinking I would try moffitt's suggestion and buy a GM belt.
