Appears we have four choices:

SBC CHEVY CHAMP STYLE ZINC OIL PAN 8 QT 86+ 1 PC
Really cheap, know of at least one person running it on a weekend driver
Canton - lots of folks run this one. Its the "can't get fired for buying IBM" pan
Yep, those are the pans I came up with as well. Any negatives on the cheapest one? I see it is $113 with HV pump pickup... Does this one have a built in windage tray or is the stock trey used with this pan?
Champ "style" is a Champ knock off, I do not recommend the Champ Style because I bought one once and they use a then guage metal and the welds are really crappy.. mine leaked and it was junk
Champ and Kevko are good alternaticves, just make sure you get a 7-1/2" deep max, or at least that is what you need on 85-89, to keep from it hanging to low
Heavier gauge means 'heavier weight' which is not a good thing if you are competing against LSx type cars (aluminum block).
Especially if you are using 'heavy' AFR heads (typically adds about 18-20 lbs vs. stock alum. lt1 heads).
All the weight adds up...
It all adds up, but 1-2 lbs can be decided on if you took a dump that day
If you use your oil pan to lift or support the engine, a cheap thin wall pan is not a good idea. I did not see him mention weight as a concern and unless both are weighed side by side, it may not be a concern at all

For me weight is not a primary concern, shoot the extra oil is a bigger percentage of any weight gain from a stock setup.
I'm just looking for a good pan that when I take the long right hand sweeper at CMP I don't starve the engine for oil. Same with the left hand sweepers at Little Taledaga and AMP

Ok. You shut me up right there.
Yes, there are situations where you need to lightly support the motor on the oil pan (like a trans/clutch change)

Hey man,, no offense meant on my part, I just recall buying the cheap "style" pan and hearing it go" crack" when I rested the engine on a wood block so I could access the clutch,, then oil started weeping,, I was soooo mad at myself for cheaping out..
