I went to buy a 160 tstat at the local Monument Auto Parts and the guy told me not to because it would "trick the ECM into thinking the car was running cooler than it really is, in turn causing it to send to much fuel which will burn up my Cat. converter". I don't have a chip but would like my 89 to run cooler than 220 since 100F+ summer is coming. This sounded like BS to me but thought I would ask the experts before I wasted the money on the tsat and have to replace the cat that I just bought.
Your inutition is right on, he doesn't know TPI; in closed loop mode the O2 sensor is king and keeps the A/F ratio correct! But the cooler temps realy benefit HP at WOT.
If you have an aux fan you can install a 160deg aux fan sw and wire it to the main fan relay (per C4 Tech Tip) to bring on the main fan too at lower temp. Otherwise you will need a chip or manual sw to turn on the main fan to keep the temp down in traffic.
Thanks 65Z01, you're going to have to send me a bill for all the great advice you've been giving me..
So if I just dump the tstat in will it keep me cool while on the highway, my commute is 57 miles one way on a 70mph highway.
Yes, my car ran at 180-190 on the highway and 220-235 in traffic. I installed the 160* stat and highway temps dropped into the 160's but traffic temps stayed the same. I installed a fan switch in conjunction with the sensor controlled relay and I can keep it at 180 in traffic now.
