Default A question about brakes.

Id like to pick up an extra set of brake calipers for my ZR-1 and have them powder coated and I know somebody parting out a base 95 Coupe. How much of the brake hardware is the same as ZR-1?Something about J55 rolling around in my head, not sure.Im looking at putting together a complete set with brackets. What do I need and how much from a base car is compatible with a 191 ZR-1? Thanks.

The J55 setup fitted to ZR1's was the optional HD setup on '89 cars and std on '96 models
Nothing interchanges between the reg (12" ) and HD ( 13" ) brake setups except the brake pads

For quick ID in a car ;
the J55 rotors are over 1" thick ( 28mm ) ; std are 3/4" thick ( 20 mm)

I went in and check with the parts manual and all parts between the 12" and 13" systems are the same but the bigger rotors and the bigger caliper bracket.

The caliper and the pads are the same parts used from 89-96 except Z15 and Z16 (CE and GS which used black calipers).

If the bracket is different, wouldn't the caliper need to be different, too?

but, its not. The C4 front caliper pads do not touch the entire rotor surface. I dont have a picture to prove it but, I had the J55 on both Vettes and the 13" rotor is larger but the pads are not. That is another great chapter on C4 engineering.

All 95's and 96's came with the 13" J55 size probably to simplify inventory at the end of production and to offer the better set across the line.

but for sure my 95 LT1 car had the big 13" rotors

I do
J55 on left . LB9 (12" ) on right
Throat opening is almost .5" wider on J55 caliper to accommodate the wider 13" rotor

Calipers are visually identical ( exp for internal width )
Extra offset for the larger rotor is obtained by repositioning the mounting holes on the abutment bracket
where it bolts to the spindle

J55 bracket shown
12" abutment bracket doesn't have the " ears" and bolt holes are as marked
putting bracket closer to the hub centerline
