I have an 1988 C4 with the 4+3 transmission. I was driving the car and everything worked fine, shifting and Over Drive when it started a knocking or banging noise under the car. This was especially noticeable in 1st Gear. I checked under the car when it was on a lift and in accordance with the shop manual it said to check the universal joints and driveshaft. I could not see any vibration but could hear the banging when it was put into gear. It felt like it was coming from the Bell Housing? Any one have a similar proiblem or could venture a guess what the problem could be.
Bolts in the C Beam that connects trans to the diff ( replaces trans x member ) are loose
or the holes elongated allowing trans to rise up and hit floor making the noise
So what turns when it is in gear that doesn't when it is out of gear.
Mine did this in 1st and 3rd but it was a cling cling cling sound like a large washer was loose on something.
We tore down the 4spd portion and rebuilt it.....my transmission guy drained out a lot of metal shavings and fourth was really worn down......Told me I was running on luck at that point.
He rebuilt the 4sp, and he took apart the DN 2sp but only to replace some gaskets that were leaking......$750 later all was good and sealed and I was fine with all that.
