LTx rebuild help
I am starting to put my 383 back together and one of the things in the book is to make sure you put a little metal ball in one of the oil ports under the rear main.
I can't find the little sucker anywhere and the disassembler doesn't recall taking one out of it or taking one out of the LT1 he also disassembled.
Does anyone know what size this thing is?
or
Is the book wrong????
If its what I'm thinking of, on SBC motors there is small freeze plug that goes down in the block oil passage under the rear main cap. I have never heard of a BB type ball ???
On the LT1 it is not a plug persay it is a ball that is press fit into the block, you absolutely need that in there so you don't have an internal engine oil leak. You might have to go to the Chevy dealer to find that part, I looked on RockAuto and GM parts direct with no luck.
I did some more poking around and sure enuff, a ball is in the LT1 stuff. I also found out that either the plug or the ball will work.
I figured the blocks were machined the same way but don't understand why the switch to the ball? Who really knows with GM!

Just got back from pulling the rear main cap off.
Yep, there is a little silver colored plug in there and I can't see through it so its all good.
All the mains are torqued down per ARP specs, almost no crank end play best I could measure was .0003
Now I've got to find another piston ring compressor, this tool I have is not usefull.
I had to purchase the 1 piece tapered style compressor on my SRP rings
The band style could not handle the job
The 1 piece is absolutely the best way to go... It's to easy

Where did you find one? I've been looking for a month.
I'm going to pick up a different band type today at NAPA.

Cool, I'll pick one up at Summit next time I'm down there. The NAPA 2 band worked for this build. But I got 2 more in the shed and one in the car that will need built over time.
All 8 pistons are in and the rod bolts are just snug. Can't find my small torque wrench so that will be tomorrows purchase. If my back feels better I may stick the cam in tonight. If not that will be tomorrows job.
