Have a 95 Corvette that I haven't driven in over a year. Finally got it running today after replacing a water pump, steering rack etc. And the alternator gets SO hot! I know a lot runs hot on these LT1 motors, but I can't even touch the top metal casing of the alternator after the car has been idling for a few minutes.
I just pulled the belt. When I spin the pulley by hand it doesn't sound good. Might just be a bad bearing, but I guess I'll have to replace the whole thing.
Yeah if you can take it apart and have what it takes to replace the bearing it may get you back in shape.
There is a shop here in town that I take all of mine to. Definitely a better option than going with a parts store replacement. Those are generally junk.
I disassembled the alternator and the bearing would have been real easy to replace. Unfortunately it's not the rear bearing that is bad, but the one on the front behind the pulley. I can't get this apart.
Oh well, I just ordered an NSA brand new alternator, hopefully it works out alright.
Well if you've got a new one coming that means you might have time to get your old one fixed. Call these guys, they do all my starters / alternators / even generators (6-volt).
They may be able to fix up your old one good as new then you'll have a spare.
I see that this is a old post but I am having the same too hot to touch alternator problem,
I just replaced mine with a new ac delco and it is soooo hot can't even touch it. also smells like electrical when I park it in the garage after a drive.

You mentioned "just replaced" so I'd say the solution is simple. If this was a "local buy" you remove and exchange locally. If this was an Internet purchase the options likely change, maybe substantially. Good luck!

It's doing the same as the old one did except this alternator charging fine
It was a internet purchase.
I had my transmission serviced a couple of weeks ago and I really haven't driven it since due to surgery and of crappy weather.
I wonder if they maybe shorted something out.
