Default Valve cover gaskets

The cork gaskets I was using started leaking so I decided to replace with rubber gaskets as this is the third time I've had to replace them using cork. I started the car and there were leaks everywhere. Everything is lined up correctly, everything is tight and I am using the load spreaders. What did I do wrong?

I finally bought new valve covers to end the bbq effect on my iron head '85. IIRC the iron head covers just used RTV from the factory.

Fel Pro makes a nice set of blue rubber gaskets with a metal flat washer sandwiched in between so when you tighten them they don't get squeezed out. Pipe

I have the thin Moroso stamped aluminum covers, and I use Fel Pro's like these on my iron head 85, except they're black. No leaks at all. IIRC they have like little fins on them that look like a windshield wiper. They also came with spreaders. I don't remember the PN but I got them at Autozone. They work great.
