I recently had my exhaust replaced on my 84, from the cat back. It is just like the stock version, dual ouput pipes on either side in the rear. I noticed that exhaust only seems to be coming out of one pipe on each side of the car. Shouldn't it be getting put out in all 4 of the pipes?
Also, I am getting a metal tinging noise, from around the middle of the underneath of the car (at least that's where it sounds like) when I accelerate now. Is that the exhaust pipe weld problem that I've read about in the forum, ya think?

apparently GM forgot to tell people about that little trick they pulled on us, mine only has 2 functional as well
The rear end assembly has two bolds that stick down over the exhaust pipe. Most likely the pipe is hitting one of these; have the shop adjust your new exhaust positioning.
I had the same problem with the "tinging" noise from under the car on my 89, I pulled the exhaust system and upon examination of the CAT I found the material inside was loose, broken in half and very brittle. Try pounding on the CAT when the car is off, if it rattles inside that's most likely the problem. I replaced the CAT with Ecklers front y-pipe and CAT combo for $249 (p/n 34198), problem gone :yesnod:
If you get a flashlight and look inside the rear tailpipes you should see that one of the pipes on each side is actually blocked, as the previous post stated, this is a GM thing. I replaced my mufflers with MAD's muffler eliminators.
My Z-51 '85 had only one functioning tip on each muffler, so as scorp said it must have started in '86. That's OK though... I replaced my system with a B&B Triflow, and it sounds great!!!
