87 vette Caliper bolt size.
I know its 14mm, not sure on the length and pitch.
want to buy them before taking it off
The only thing that makes them unique is the pre-applied coating of threadlocker. Sorry. but that price is absolutely absurd. Even getting them from a GM dealer would cost only a couple bucks at best.
If you do want to get new bolts, the bolts are metric and 8mm x 1.25 thread pitch and about 22mm long. The strength is metric grade 10.9 (same as SAE Grade 8).
Any hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot should have bolts of that same size but possibly not the same strength. NAPA and other chain parts stores should carry these bolts although they may not have pre-applied threadlocker; these bolts are pretty generic to GM disc brakes.
not a good thing. the front passenger side locked up, skidded for about 100 yards, blue smoke all over.
kind of funny story to it though...
here i am, stuck on a main road in the fast lane. can't go forward.
a fortunately nearby cop pulls over to block traffic for me, since i was blocking a lane. i had already called for a tow, and gotten out of the car.
about 1/2 hr later, no tow. they wanted to know where they where.. so i called the tow company, guy was on a call, and tow truck was going to be another hour, cop got impatient, ordered to move the car off road or they will call the "on call" tow company. (big $$)
thats when i discovered i could drive backwards, just not forward. (figured it was a caliper or bearing issue)
so they block the whole road, while i backed the car onto the sidewalk/swale area across the road. they said wait for the tow truck and left me there alone!
once they left, i thought "hey, i can drive backwards!" Fortunately, in this area of florida, the sidewalks and swale area are as big as a lane.
so here i am, driving my vette backwards, on the sidewalk, on a major road, in the wrong direction. hoping no cop see's me.
pull into the next side street where there is a closed car wash, drive backwards into the parking lot, pulled backwards into a parking spot, cancelled the tow truck. WHEW.
take wheel off, see the problem.. then it occurred to me.. if i change the good bolt to the missing bolt, will i be able to go forward and not backward?
Will it work? YES it does!
so swap the bolt, carefully drive back home (20 mph) forward only.
now the car is in the garage, just have to get the bolts.
lesson learned. when you do a brake job (which i just did about a month ago, pads and rotors), MAKE SURE YOU USE LOCK TIGHT! They WILL vibrate lose and fall out, and at the worst time.
never occurred to me that there was lock tight on there, never even gave it a thought.
This is a true story, i can imagine people watching a vette driving backwards (against traffic) down a sidewalk.... In hindsight, I am laughing about it now, but it wasn't funny then...
jackdidly, lock tight those bolts, what i went through SUCKED! you don't want to have to do it, i could have really gotten hurt if it was on a highway.
