Similarly, I called AZ for a battery a few years ago. "1994 Corvette, sure we have several that will fit". I drive there, go in and the guy shows me these POS no-name brand batteries that you have to fill with water and that are twice the size of the stock battery, and all have top mounted posts. Thanks for all your help... :mad
Yeah, while they are not the brightest bulbs in the chain, they are good to have around sometimes!
They have bailed me out a couple of times on other cars I've been working on, and you can normaly find *1* good person in the store that knows what you mean.
But I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about when I say "Year make and model of your vehicle?"
Last Time I was in there I was looking for something easy, like 3/4" heater hose or something dumb like that. "Year make and model" I'm like.. uhhh you dont need that info, I just need 2 Feet of 3/4" hose, "sir I need the vehicle information to get the part."
I ended up telling the kid I had an 86' benz... "1986 benz?" "No, 1886" "They didnt make cars in 1886" "yes they did" The conversation went downhill from there. But I did get my hose!
Here's one for ya. I was at an AutoZone the other day.
The customer is there trying to buy coils for his boss's 1996 corvette.
The counter guys and the customer ask me:
How many ignition coils does a 1996 have?
To everyone out there that is saving a buck on parts, I have one comment.
Tell them to RTFM.
Make them get out their catalog.
It's just like waiting behind someone at a stop light who forgets that they can make a right-hand turn on red after a complete stop. You can either get pissed at them for not going OR you can honk your horn.
So honk your horn at them or make them lose your business. Believe me...I know firsthand the problems of having computer look-up and incompetent sales people. Hell, even the dealership I went to couldn't find the Diverter Valve Solenoid for me so I had him bring up the line drawings and I pointed to the part. He then had trouble finding that part even though it was numbered. Figuring the part was no longer available, I had him look-up a hose that was right next to it. He couldn't find that part either. So I went 20 miles across town, another Chevrolet dealer told me that the Diverter Valve Solenoid was no longer available but the hose was...backing up my suspicion that part guy A was more lost than Link in Zelda.
try ordering the parts on line for Autozone. Then just pick up the parts a No Brainer !!!!! Or go to Tom Chevrolet (Norwood MA) They know there cars!. Quirk is cool in Briantree orders parts without having me pay in advance.
Um...(raises hand tentatively)...there's only one 'coil' on a 1996...just like my 1993, I believe...
Do I win?
Ya you win :yesnod:
That's the answer I gave them but for some reason the counter guy did not believe me. So the counter guy ordered 8 coils for the customer. That customer's boss is going to be pissed
I guess the :conehead was convinced the 1996 had an LS1.
The golden rule with autozone and most parts places theese days is if its not in the computer it dosent exist,,,,the sad part is that all stores do have awsome parts books with all the parts in them, they just cant be bothered to look,,i had been trying to find the spiral ring retainers for injecters to the fuel rail for days and they swore that they didnt have them, after some advice form another forum member i demanded that they look in the book, the manager came over to appease me and said fine ill look it up.....and guess what they WERE in the book and they even had them IN STOCK,,,even thou they swore they didnt exist cause they wernt in the computer :smash:
sometimes its worth the extra money to go to the small place with people that actually understand what they are doing.........
Do what I do, go to their website and look up the part and get the number and then go to their store and give them the part #. Mess with their heads every chance you get.
The golden rule with autozone and most parts places theese days is if its not in the computer it dosent exist...
Yes, very sad...
I'm trying to get a Melling 22209 camshaft for my 63 SBC FI 327...(097 replacement)...Melling tells me by email that Autozone can order it for me (Melling only sells to distributors)...My local Autozone tells me it's not available...Melling tells me the page in the catalog to look at; Autozone tells me it's not in the computer, they can't order it...Melling tells me go to O'Reillys instead...Fine, but there's no O'Reillys in NYS...
I gave Melling the store #, street address, and managers name of the Autozone that's causing Melling to lose business...
