Since I have a Greenwood body kit I can't remove that side panel..The best way I have found to remove the battery is to use an impact gun and remove the 4 bolts on the brace over top of the battery "2 on top", "2 on bottom on frame"...This takes me about 30 seconds for each bolt, remove the battery , then put them back in..This is the easiest and fastest way I have found to get to the battery, a big plus is you don't have to worry about messing up your paint.....WW
Mine relay isn't there, I traced the wires and they go into the abs compartment near the rear speaker. I found NO information about the 88's relay location in any manual and even the chevy dealer was stumped today. ?????WTF????? I don't want to take the whole car apart. I know where the solinoids are, but they are relay controlled.
I only have the '92 FSM, but maybe the 88 is similar. I found something in Book#2 under Electrical Diagnosis (index)-Convertible Roof. There it says the relay is located in the RH front of the cargo compartment, but there isn't a location diagram.
In the diagnosis section, step 1 is to remove the relay and jumper terminals 4 & 5 while listening for the solenoids to actuate. If they do, jumper terminal 2 to ground while listening for the solenoids to actuate. That should get you started in figuring things out.
Good luck.

Thanks HEEPS I traced the solinoid wires to the ABS section of the trunk, it goes down under the left rear speaker. I'm thinking it's in that compartmet, the space where my Bose speaker boxes were, but on the right side, I guess that would be the RH compartment. In reality there is no compartment without taking anything apart in my car, if it's back there it must be under the speaker next to the ABS unit.
