Default carb air filter

Ok so im almost done my carb swap on my 383. I just need to run my fuel lines once I get my regulator in the mail ( thanks red l98). when i closed my hood and looked under I saw there is very little hood clearence for a air filter. What did you guys use for one? I would rather not cut the hood.

If you want to use the round type, you need a drop base air filter mount.

What edelbrock intake do you have ?
I could not get a performer rpm under my hood with a 14" air cleaner.
In fact the carb by itself barely fits.
I got a performer EPS under the hood with a special combo air cleaner.
If you have a regular performer "2101" or torker II a normal drop base 14" air cleaner will work.

Does your carb have a choke housing? you can gain 3/4" if you mill it off.

Not really, you still have to clear the bowl vent tubes.
you gain air flow from cutting off the choke housing but not hood clearance. Holley HP main body without choke housing was the first thing I did.

3/4 might be a little optimistic, I would need to acually measure again to be sure. but, you can put the lid right down on the vents if the choke housing is milled. If the housing is intact the lid must be higher to flow well. I cant find it now but I did some air curtian calculations and decided I had to ditch the choke housing if I wanted to use a decent intake. The HP main body is my first choice as well, K&N used to make a couple of plastic fittings that smothed flow into milled as well as unmilled air horns. They help paticularly where the lid is too close to the air horn. Sooner or later I see hole in the hood if I want to use anything bigger than a performer. Brodix has a slick lookin little 2plane with a low pad hight that may warrent a close look.
ProjectC4 what intake are you running?

you mean this Brodix ? A lot of talk online about it being shorter but it is not. I got excited and bought one only to find out it was taller at the front of the carb pad which is where it matters on a C4 because of the way the hood slopes.

Performer EPS... I know, I don't like it either, but I am going to have to settle for now.

Has anyone ever seen the air cleaner bases that open up straight back towards the windshield, but are round toward the front of the car? Kind of like a shovelish shape.

Do you think you could use a spectre cab hat? Then hook it to the duct of your original air filter housing.

Only if you have a cowl hood. They are 4" tall. I have one right now.
