Need help!!! My 88 vette seems to rev high in third gear.and then catch after awhile but i can't really go over 75 mph I don't really know what the problem can be I'm sure it's a tranny issue..any help is appreciated.. Im new to this corvette world
Google 700r4 3 4 clutch pack failure. IMHO you describe classic early warning signs.
Time to start planning a rebuild. The good news tho is that with modern parts your trans will be stronger than any 700r4/4L60 that ever left the factory.
I suspect that your ATF will already look more like coffee than tea and the magnets will have some crud on them.
Does it also do it in Drive (not overdrive), i had that symptom on a reco transmission. Was fine in drive but in overdrive it would rev and after a few seconds bang into gear, they replaced the valve body and it was fine.
Pull the transmission dip stick and the fluid color will tell you, red is good brown or pink is bad if you can smell a burning smell is bad also.
hey guys!
thank you all so much for the help... @gerardvg yeah after driving it for few blocks i can smell some burning and white smoke... it does it in drive.. i'll check the tranny fluids today and get back with u guys later today
@ sam, i went out to the garage and smelled the tranny fluid and it just smell like old burn fluid..like i said it was black...the thing is i wanna learn how to do this myself because i know if i take it to some shop they are gonna cheat me out off my money!

If it smells burnt it is,toast. You can remove it yourself but I would let someone rebuild it for you. Its about 7 hrs roughly to R&R it.
