Hey guys im just wondering how many of you have done this. I took out all the piping and electrical components for smog, but still have the pump. What did you guys do with the wiring and how did you get rid of that lower tubing that seems to go to the bottom of the block?
I removed everything involved with the air pump, including the pump and all the associated hoses and lines. I initially plugged the line at the cat and the lines at the exhaust manifolds (later got headers with no smog fittings and eliminated the cats all together). I bought the Breathless air pump eliminator bracket and taped up the electrical connection and zip-tied it to my AC bracket. It's been that way for probably 10 years with no ill effects
I did exactly the same thing that "TA" above has done..The connectons are just taped and tucked... You have to have the nipple on the cat either welded shut or capped or it will make a lot of noise..As far as the air pump goes, you can get a pump eliminator or some guys open the pump case up, break off the fins inside, and use the original pump instead of buying an eliminator......WW
I just finished removing the AIR system from my '87. Because I was also removing the A/C stuff, it made the removal of the AIR stuff that much easier.
I installed a TPiS bracket and it works fine. It helps to remove the alternator too. Opening up the area around the front of the motor gives you a chance to clean everything. With the TPiS bracket, you will need a serp belt that is about 2" shorter.
The two "black boxes" are only held by the rubber air hoses so it's a matter of unplugging the two electrical connectors, removing the hoses, pulling out the intake hose and "muffler".
There is also a vacuum line that goes to each box so it must be capped. This line is hard plastic and it can break. Pull the tee fitting off and use a 5/32 vacuum line cap on the end. Use a wire tie to secure it out of the way.
To cap the metal tubes on the exhaust manifolds, get a pair of 1/2" pipe caps from Lowe's or HD. The threads on the manifold pipes are pipe thread. Use some high-temp RTV sealant on the threads on the pipe caps and install.
The long pipe that goes to the main cat can be removed at the cat, but the pipe on the cat has to be closed either by bending it shut or welding a cap on it.
