Default ob1 to ob2 adapter

I've got a ob2 code scanner. I forget the brand.
If I get an adapter, what will I be able to do with it on my 84 vette?
What adapter should I get?
What scanner do you recommend?
Theres nothing wrong with the vette just want to poke around in the computer.
Would I be able to change anything, like shift points or timing advance, or just see what I have?
Thanks
Also I have a laptop. Is that a better method to my meens?

you need more than just a different adapter, if the scan tool is only OBD-2, then it will NOT talk to your 84, which is OBD-1. You need to get a scan tool that specifically is able to interface with an OBD-1 system.

The "gold standard" is the Tech 1, or Tech 1A. These are the GM dealership scan tools that were designed specifically for GM. Another option is the Mastertech, which uses the same hardware and software as the Tech 1 but is more versatile.

There are cheaper options as well, but none that can perform bidirectional functions (such as turning off fuel injectors, etc).

There is software for your laptop, but you'll need a cable. Plenty of options out there if you use a search engine....

Find out what kind of scanner you have. Some can read OBDI if they have the cable for it. If the cable on yours cant' be detached then it will not work with an 84.

Also, original C4's don't have a flash memory. You can ready what is happening but not make changes. You need to physically replace the chip.

Laptop can only be used to read a 1984 computer.

Go on E-Bay and pick up a Snap-On MT2500 OBDII which is OBDI compatable. I got a great deal on mine and it included alot of attachments. I got about $700 worth of stuff for $325 with shipping, ya just gotta know what you're looking for/at.
