I put a head together, and when you put the valve through the seal, theres a plastic piece you put over the stem of the valve so you don't damage the seal. question I have is, if I need to remove a valve after a head is assembled, does pulling the valve back out truly damage the seal or will it be ok if I just go slow ?

The plastic piece is because the valve lock groove can be sharp and tear the seal....
If your VERY careful removing and re-installing the valves you won't damage the seal without it.

When I put 1.6:1 RR & new springs into my prior '88 I installed new valve seals too; they slid over the keeper grooves easily with no special tool and no snags.
thanks for ya'alls comments. I cant remember if I cleaned the seats off before I assembled the head, dangit. I probably did, but .... just want to go back and have another look.
What's the most you can shim a valve spring ? I have one that looks like its about 050" down...

Aftermarket spring locators are usually .062 thick... Valve spring shims are offered in thickness' of .015, .030 and .060....
On smog era BBC's that had exhaust rotators you commonly shim .250 to get rid of the rotators when using aftermarket performance valve springs/retainers/locks.... however they make special spacers/spring seats for that.
I prefer to stack NO more than .120 worth (2X .060) of shims under a spring - OR no more than 3 shims total.... Those shims rub against each other and the more of them you have stacked, the more metal your putting in the oil.
With .050 difference in spring set up height, I'd either:
1. Put a .060 under it .
2. Put a .030 and .015 under it .
