Default Stiff Climate Control Slider

'85 Corvette...
Each year I find that the lower slider on the climate control - the one that controls interior temperature, is getting harder to slide in either direction. Before I break something, I'm looking for other owners' experiences on what the most probable area is that needs attention. Cable, blend door, hinge? Just tell me where to aim the WD-40...

Interesting...a more thorough search of the threads shows this problem in one way or another being identified by 2 or 3 other members, but no one seems to have reported a fix...until either the cable breaks, control level breaks or either end of the cable gets disconnected. I've come to the conclusion that everything can be found under the dash between the control head and the heater box above the right hush panel. I'll take a look inside, find the sticky culprit and report back after I've done the fix.

Easy fix...lesson learned - spare yourself the hassle of removing the centre console cover as the control head does not easily slide out and with all the connections on the backside the risk is there that something will break or disconnect. Instead, remove the hush panel and up above the mass of wires going to the ECM you'll find where the cable attaches to the heater door lever. Remove the little hat-shaped cerclip and the one screw that holds the cable, then pull the cable out where you can access it. I lubricated that end of the cable first, which helped a little and then I sprayed some WD-40 through the slit where the lever goes into the control head and voila...things started sliding nicely. Nothing broken just have to re-assemble but I'll do that tomorrow.

Hi Pletzvet.
I came across this old thread of yours dealing with the same problem I have with the STIFF CLIMATE CONTROL SLIDER. I'm interested in more detail as to where you lubricated things to get it moving easily again. I have an '85 also. I just finished installing a new heater core and cable clips on the vent door rod ends.
My parents live in North Bay. I'm retired and currently live in Kingston.
I didn't know how to message you so I added to this old post. Hoping you see it.
Cheers
Brad

I think he meant the bell-crank on the heater box that the cable attaches to. That's where mine was frozen.

Don't go by the colors. I cleaned and painted mine while I had it out. A little oil on the vertical pivot pin freed it up.

Thanks Kilobuck84

I never thought to give that pin a hit with oil when I had it tore apart. Although without the cable attached but the rod to the vent door attached, I could move that v-bracket easily. I was actually surprised at how little effort it took. Probably should have sprayed the vent door hinge too but like I say it moved easily. I'll give that pivot pin a good bath of WD40.
Hopefully that loosens things up.
Cheers
Brad
