Hi all,
I'm a c4 newbie and am wondering if what I'm hearing
is normal or not.
I sometimes notice a sceech type of sound when shifting.
Happens if engine has too many rpms when letting clutch out.
Another way to reproduce is to accelerate in 1st at ~50% throttle
and then press in clutch without immiediately letting off gas.
After a few days of driving I got to where I can shift without
this noise (ie get the rpms right). I'm just wondering if this is normal.
I just got out of a mustang, which had a considerably more forgiving clutch.
I have a similar deal when shifting from 1-2 or 2-3 sometimes. It was mostly when i first started to drive the car and wasn't used to it. I rarely have any noise now.
Its lower than a screech though..
Ratracer,
I don't think its the pilot as you describe. It's not every
time the clutch goes in or out, only when the rpms are too
different from what they will/would be with the clutch fully
engaged.
It sounds to me like its the flywheel spinning on the clutch disk
briefly.
thanks
Ken
That's when the pilot bushing does it's job. It is the bearing that couples the engine rpm and the tranny rpm. When the pilot bushing starts to give out it will squeel occasionally when there is a large differential between the rpm of the engine and tranny. When it gets real bad it will squeel any time the clutch is pushed in.
Fortunately the pilot bushing is only loaded during shifts or when you are idling in gear. It is not very critical and you can postpone replacing for a while until it starts squeeling everytime you use the clutch.
Holy Sheeeeet what a small world, I live in North Aurora too! (as you probably saw from my profile) Orchard Crossing subdivision right across the street
