the first one I mounted (still works great after 5 years) was on the firewall above and behind the power brake booster (youll need to dremmel two of the plastic ridges on the rear of the booster for slightly more clearance) on my neigbors 1985 vette we mounted it really high up in the passenger foot well in the cab to get it out of the engine head area, either place works but behind the brake booster is less trouble
Is yours under the driver's side headlight? I was checkin' it out, and it is rather tight with the cannister and everything! :seeya
Yes it is. I had to reposition :smash: it after trying to close the headlights the first time after the install. The headlights came up okay without rubbing but got hung up when closing.
I'm running the Accel 300+ and have had good luck with it. The only thing to watch out for in these systems is keeping them dry. The Accel has an inline fuse which blows if the box senses that its wet. (unfortunately I found this out. :-)). Other than that, with the ignition box and coil, the throttle response and MPG gain is noticible.
Mine is mounted on the passenger side brace right behind the passenger side wheel well.
I know that the MSD box is pretty popular, but I have no complaints about the 300+
86 Vette, MSD 6AL installed in passenger side lower compartment below the headlight. Converted to Small Cap HEI MSD Distributor, I think part no. is 8366 and external dual connecter coil. I did have the MSD 6AL located on top of the battery secured by a 3" piece of velcro , one strip on the box and the other on the top of the battery. Worked great. A shop relocated my box without asking, but it works OK where it is, so I did not move it back.
You know, for those who have the Breathless Intake, I mounted mine right next to it (by the box) on top of the radiator shroud. Fits perfect, and no water problems when I wash my engine.
Actually, the previous owner of my car utilized a type of double-sided sticky strip to mount it on top of the battery. The sticky stuff looks like a long piece of Juicy Fruit gum, and it's just gummy enough to hold things solid without the disadvantage of the MSD becoming permanently affixed to the battery caps. There's plenty of room in that position, with the MSD tucked safely under the hood latch support. It sits solid and doesn't move at all, yet it doesn't pose any problems when its time to service the battery. I've got it mounted square on the back corner of my battery - see the pic.
P.S. - I took that thing off my water pump and hustled it down to the frisbee golf course last weekend for some late night fun :nono: :D
How do you like that MSD distributor? I did try to get one of these units last year when I was having ignition problems (bad module) and the guy at Summit ended up shipping a unit with a mechanical advance which was incompatible with the car. I now see that MSD has a newer model distributor which will fit on the electronic HEI vehicles. Was this mod worth it for your setup?
That's actually a Hypertech Street/Strip distributor. I have had nothing but positive experience with this ignition setup. I bought the car with the ignition as it is now, and it's performed flawlessly for me. Seems pretty well bulletproof.
Eventually I'll install the MSD Digital 6. It has some nice features that I like. I don't expect any major HP gains, but rather it should just allow me to make the most out of what I already have.
Rome, thanks for the pic and the details!! I now can pursue several mounting options. :seeya And man, you've got a sweet ride, dude!! :yesnod:
I took my tach filter out, but I am not getting a reading. I was having problems with the tach acting funny over 3000rpm (with just a MSD coil) and removing the tach filter helped it, but when I put in the MSD I lost the tach. It may have been the other way around, it been 2 years since my car was on the road.
When running an MSD6/AL you need to splice your tach wire into the white wire on the MSD harness. The MSD tech folks told me that leaving the tach wire connected at the distributor cap can fry your tach in addition to not working.
Thanks a lot, jmr302!! I'm sure that would've been a problem had you not given me this tip! Was it a "normal" splice, or were there other particulars? :seeya

Nothing tricky, just splice into the wire. I had to make my own harness to mount the MSD box under the passenger side headlight, next to the rad overflow tank so I just spliced into that.
If you haven't done this sort of thing before I highly suggest getting familiar with a soldering iron and how to use it properly. Ditto for heat shrink and a heat gun. There are several very experienced electrical guys here and there are some soldering technique related posts hiding in the archives.
Life's too short to burn your 'vette down because some twisted-together wire connection failed or grounded on something.
This splicing of the tack wire you all are speaking of,....does this just apply to the L98 cars or the LT1 also? The instructions I have don't say anything about having to rewire the tach.
