It has always been said,, if you have any play at all by rocking the wheel back and forth, and top to bottom , it needs to be replaced ....WW

Less than 0.10" - maybe can get away with it for a little while for a weekend or daily driver car. I daily drove mine with just over 0.1" play for a week while waiting for parts ONCE. Now I keep a set on the shelf.
Any play at all = they are getting changed and another set of bearings getting ordered.

I've done the hubs a few times and was going to try and measure the amount of play once or twice. As other have said, I came to the conclusion that if I could feel play in the bearing, it was past the allowable limit. A tiny amount of play translated into very noticeable road noise in my case.
