Default Speedometer lens replacement

I have the new speedometer lens for my 1991.

First, I thought it would be really straight forward. Remove the bezel screws remove the bezel, and... well, the bezel is wedged between the lock, and the rest of the steering column.

I guess, from what I read, the only way to get it out is to drop the steering column?

Secondly, are there nuts on the back of the screws holding the lens in place or are they tapped into the speedometer housing plastic? (Just wondering so I don't unscrew them "in place" and have a tiny nut fall back somewhere in my dash.)

Steering column must be dropped. Remove carpeted hush panel, then metal dash support (4x 10mm bolts), then column can be dropped (2 bolts, 15mm I think).

The screws holding the lens do not have nuts on the back.

I usually remove the whole cluster at that point and work on it on the bench. It's no more work to do that than to try to work on it in the car, it just pulls straight out once you remove the 4 x 7mm screws that hold it in to the dash skeleton.
