Antenna problem in friend's '87
My red '87 conv. has a radio antenna that stays up. (I guess that's better than down.) Anyway, I'd like to isolate the problem. Could it be a blown fuse, relay, loose wire or something else? When the radio is turned on, there is no motor noise. I assume that means there is no power to it. Any ideas?
The antenna motor has a built in up/down switch which stops the motor in each position (up or down) and sets the motor up for reversing when the antenna relay changes state (relay coil on or off). You can tell if the antenna motor or its up/down switch is defective by turning on the radio and measuring if 12 v is between the dark green and grey wire going to the antenna motor (drk grn +12v, grey gnd for down which is your case). Listen at the rear of the cargo compartment, you should hear the antenna relay click when you turn on the radio and click again when you turn off the radio. If no click, then remove the trim at the rear of the hatch and check if the relay is plugged in and then check for 12 v on the orange wire on the relay socket when the radio is on.
