conditions are at idle. its been in the garage since i dropped the new motor in and i want to get the bugs out before I take it for a ride.

OK, now how long does it take to reach that temp and under what conditions? You could have an air pocket, the timing could be off, the temp sensor could be bad and not kicking the fan on at 228. Do some more diagnostics and let us know what's goin on

You really need to get a timing light and do it properly, guessing doesn't work...Don't forget you have to unplug the "electronic timing advance" to get it timed right..its the tan and brown wire under the brake booster..Also a 160 degree thermostat won't make it run any cooler, and since you live in NY you may have a problem with it running to cool when the weather gets colder..I would leave the 180 stat in...Last but not least you should pull the radiator shroud and clean the area in front of the radiator, this area gets clogged up with leaves and trash and should be cleaned at least every other year........WW

Get that timing right (no more than 8 degrees) than take a spin and see how it goes.

time to time !
OK, I bought a timing light at autozone and got home and hooked it up. I could not see the mark so I started from scratch and pulled the dist. and set the timing again. It runs better and it has cooled down. with the 160 stat temp is seeing 170's which is nice. still think the timing is off as I can not see the mark on the harmonic balancer with the timing light. hmm i must be doing something wrong here.
