OK- on an upshift at around 4000 rpm into 5th it actually made that unmistakeable sound of gear GRIND (and I assure you the clutch was fully depressed). I've also noticed that over the last few months, it's sticking when I change gears- (any gear change, but mostly 1 to 2, and 4 to 5), and intermittently. I checked the fluid level- a little short, I filled to the proper level- with no difference. When I bought the vette the prev owner said he'd had the clutch master cyl replaced, but had no receipt. Are you guys thinking:
-clutch
-clutch master cyl
-both

If you pump the clutch pedal a few times before the shift, does it go in any easier? If so, you may either have a little air in the system or your slave cylinder is going away.
Clutch master cyl. would be my first thingk to look at. When mine went bad fluid was leaking into the driver floorboard. It would stick between shifts.
If I pump the clutch it does shift easy- (usually just one pump). Haven't noticed any fluid on the floorboard though... How could I clear it if it's air? Suggestions?

You can take it Gary Kropat at Austin Corvette http://www.austincorvette.com/ . He'll treat you right. Has lots of experience on all 5 versions of the Corvette.
I you have over 50k miles on the car, replace the clutch master and slave. It is cheap insurance considering the cost of a ZF rebuild. Sounds like your hydralic system is screwed.
To date (11/06/01) I have rebuilt 98 of these ZF S6-40 transmissions. I would say that 95% of those were damaged while operating with some type of degraded hydraulic clutch condition.
Power shifting while under these conditions can cause catastrophic damage to the synchronizers and their related components.
Agreed- I should get it looked at soon. If anyone knows of a good tech in San Antonio, please refer me! I could drive it to Austin, but it would be easier to get it done locally. Thanks for the help- J
