I have noticed a missfire on my 95 Lt1. I changed the plugs and it still persists. Last night we finally had a nice night, so i took it for a ride to see if it continued on a dry day. It was worse. Also, a "SYS" code started to flash where the milage normally is. Today i found plug wire 5 has rubbed through the coating to the wire. Would this be the problem or does the "Sys" mean somthing else? Anyhelp would be appreciated. thanks in advance.
I just replaced my plug wires. My #5 & #7 had cuts all the way through the jacket. At night you could see the sparks fly. I had a slight miss before the replacment and now everything is running smooth.
Sorry, but I don't know anything about the sys code. Your at the right place to find out though.
Insulation missing on a plug wire shows that it is rubbing on something and it should not. Reduce the insulation and this will be a spot where the spark will occur and not at the plug gap causing that cylinder not to fire and the engine to shake at idle and a felt "miss" at driving speed. Dress that wire away from where it is rubbing, or better still , also replace the wire.
If you go to all the trouble to replace the wires (and I do mean trouble) then you might as well take a peek inside the optispark. You can tell if you need a new one, if not it's a good idea to replace the rotor.
You have a 95 so a problem with the optispark isn't as likley as with older non vented models.
I replaced the wires this weekend, and it got rid of the misfire. The drivers side was a Pain in the butt. The passenger side took 15 minutes. Also, wire # 7 and 5 were worn through. I replaced them and the mis fire continued. It was wires that i thought would be fine that were the problem.
The "SYS" code still flashes (not regularly). Yesterday, i took it for a drive and when i got back in to drive home, it took 3 turns of the key to turn over. I never had that happen. It has always been on the first try. I'm concerned because of the problem starting and the "SYS" code. I guess i'll just have to get it checked on a computer.
Does anyone know how to get to the Coil wire? I can not even see it let alone change it.
I would get "SYS" flashing on the mileage display after I had been working on the car for a while and the battery wouldn't start the car and needed to be jumped, eventually I replaced the battery and no more SYS light, even after being disconnected and working on the car.
