I have an 84 c4 my automatic trans hangs up in 1st gear and will not shift ,I was told this could be caused by a dirty governor, does anyone have any experiance with this . if the governor could not cause this what else could be wrong ? I think the trans is a 700r4 . will any chevy 84 700r4 transmissions fit in the vette or is the vette trans a special unit?

Easy enough to prise the gov cover off to remove it and check it's operation.
Also not uncommon for the gov drive gear to be stripped

Same but different.
Vette trans primarily has different shift points to reg trans and a shorter output shaft
so you must use the Vette only tailshaft housing ( mounts the C Beam ) and cut 3/4" off the output shaft of any reg T700
when looking for a rebuilt or used unit it must be vette specific
Up to you
A non Vette one will not have the shift programming a Vette one does if that is important to you
but will be cheaper and easier to find than the rarer Vette only T700
Often Vette rebuilt T700 are exchange only

As well as shorten the output shaft as I said above
The case and valve body are different in Corvette 700r4s. I heard one difference is that you can downshift at any speed. I'm not sure how important that is to you...
I have a great used tranny in Colorado $400. & it,s yours. Out of a 1985 L-98 car with 42K on it when they wreck it. Let me know if you are interested. Thank you Dirk.
