Default C4 Rear IRS Weight

What is the weight of a complete 91 Independent Rear Suspension (IRS)?

Dana 36/44 does not matter to me for this question.

I saw a thread that list weights for various components of the C4, but could not find an entire rear suspension weight.

Thanks.

Just checked the shipping receipt for one I purchased out of a 90 ZR1, total weight was 285, keep in mind that includes the shipping pallet, hope that helps.

It's around 250 from Rotor to roter .. I saved weight going to a straight axle .

how is that possible?

You are telling me that the steel housings, axle tubes, axles themselves, weighed less than a bunch of aluminum components?

Yup , Mine was also narrowed 10inches , aluminum spool, gun drilled axles, and chromemoly axle tubes ... I was able to lift the thing off the bed of my truck and to my garage floor all by myself .. try doing that with an IRS

I, too, just switched to a straight axle in my C4 '91. I've done this before in a C3 '82.

Thanks.

Here are some specs from a stock Ford 9":

9-inch Rear End Assembly Weight: 194 lbs.

1. Housing: 38 lbs.

2. Axles: Large Journal, 28-spline - 18 Lbs. ea.

3. Brakes: Massive 11-1/32 x 2½" Drum Assemblies - 26 lbs. ea.

4. 3rd Member: Conventional Diff. - 68 lbs.
a. w/Traction-Lok Diff. - 71 lbs.

Now, when you get into the lighter aftermarket stuff and disc brakes, things get lighter;
Hence, a solid axle saves weight over the heavier C4 IRS.

yessss , I could've saved more weight if i went with a Fab 9 with an aluminum center section like i 1st had planned , I still punch myself in the face for listening to my friend who talked me into a 12 bolt so i can class race the car.. which i never do or ever will , he even gave me the speech of how a 9inch eats up more HP

I like the 9", because the entire case can be removed to work on it.

The solid axle completed my coil-over conversion as well. I'm not a fan of the mono-leaf spring. It has its advantages & disadvantages like all suspension systems.

Anyway, even with the 12-bolt, you are lighter, & have a solid axle.

All of my photos are kept on backup sources. I have uploaded others' photos via a link online before, but none of mine are online. In other words, I don't believe I can just upload a photo from my computer onto the forum.

When the entire IRS is compared to an aftermarket solid axle, the solid definitely weighs less (especially a narrowed one).

Thanks for the numbers.
