they claim 2 tenths reduction in E/T, and a gain of 2 mph. has anyone used this system and got similar results? im looking to maybe replace my cut lid & K&N with one of these if the numbers they advertise are up to par. thanks in advance
Re: anyone using TPIS cold air induction? (tpivette89)
I have one, but am not using it. It's a nice piece and looks like it would flow much better than the stock one. I was planning to put it up on ebay, but let me know if you're interested in it. The one I have is for '89 and earlier.
Re: anyone using TPIS cold air induction? (tpivette89)
I have one on mine.
I'm pretty happy with it.
There were some pretty minor clearance issues.
Mine has the lower piece that you fasten and mount
to the fan shroud. In my case, I had to be sure of the
final position of that base before I was happy with the
clearance and everything else.
You have to transfer the clips and pins thas hold it to the MAF.
Be real careful and patient and they'll come out pretty easily.
Overall installation for me was not as quick and pleasant as I had hoped
considering the price, but now that it's in, I'm glad I have it.
At higher speeds I can feel the SLP ram air I have working.
I removed it and put the open-lid filter on the car without the SLP ram air, and Off the line the car pulled better, but after 70-80 it felt 'slower', that with the SLP. My temperatures in hot weather are about 15-20F lower though without it, so I might get a different ram air setup instead of it. I modified mine as to not usign the water shield they ship with it, and enlarging the 'scoop' area to about 4" instead of the 1-1.5" it comes form SLP.
I ran some et's with and without it, but I have major wheelspin issues so I can't go by that. My MPH has gone down about 1-1.5mph though when I do a full burn run...
Re: anyone using TPIS cold air induction? (Black 'n Blue)
the TPIS peice look like it flows better then the SLP one, especially where it meets the MAF. the SLP kinda bottlenecks airflow to it while the TPIS unit doesnt. of course, no matter how much air you can get into the MAF, the airflow sensor itself becomes a restriction. why doesnt any aftermarket companies make larger MAFs for TPI cars like they do the LT1/LS1s? alls they offer us is stock ones with the fins removed!
Re: anyone using TPIS cold air induction? (tpivette89)
It does look like the TPIS unit has the potential to flow better than the SLP. There are no restrictions inside the TPIS intake, like where the hold down bolts pass through the others. The SLP unit uses a larger air filter, but it looks to me like it's going to be packed in pretty tightly, so may not offer much if any advantage.
Re: anyone using TPIS cold air induction? (MrNuke)
. My temperatures in hot weather are about 15-20F lower though without it, ...
Is this normal?!?!... Does adding a cold air induction package cause the car to run hotter?!?... Does just opening the lid make a car run hotter, compared to stock?!??... also... I know the SLP unit is around $150, how much is the TPIS unit?... I've been looking into doing this, but am debating whether it might be a better compromise to just open the lid and not having to worry about water being introduced into the engine, but I don't want to either, if it will make the car run hotter. (BTW, I don't race the car, it's my daily driver, so it does see rain from time to time)
Re: anyone using TPIS cold air induction? (88-L98-Z52)
the TPIS package is $250. i believe both the TPIS and SLP systems come with a splash guard to prevent water from entering the intake. i currently have the cut air lid mod and have driven in several rainstorms with no problems. i havent noticed any temp increses either
Re: anyone using TPIS cold air induction? (tpivette89)
As one of the others stated, mine DID run hotter with
the SLP cold air pkg. I ended up trimming it so it would still draw
air from the radiator area, but it no longer blocked some of the
port for the air to get to the rad. It was fine cruising the
interstate, but any kind of stop and go traffic would send the temp
right to 220F.
My TPIS package does not do this. I don't drive in the rain much,
but I was a little worried about the "Just in case" scenario, so
I built a baffle that allowed plenty of air, yet offered a little restriction
to any rain water that might find its' way there.
Re: anyone using TPIS cold air induction? (corvette_bob)
The more I read and think about it... the more I am leaning towards just opening the air lid and installing a K&N filter... It doesn't seem like there is much 'bang for the buck' difference with the cold air induction units over the open lid route. The $150-$250 could probably be spent better somewhere else from what I've heard. I'm not a racer who's trying to squeeze out every possible horsepower point, but at the same time I'm not opposed to making reasonable improvements in efficiency. And secretly.. I wasn't really looking forward to cutting up the radiator shroud anyway.
