So, I was at my first car show today and was talking to another owner who seemed to know a whole lot more about cars than I do. I bought my 85 corvette about a year ago and really expected a lot more power from 0-60. He told me that the gears in my differential were 300 and I should probably go to 350. He then very quickly described what he would do to achieve this, and although I was very interested in the idea, after just a couple of sentences, all I was hearing was, "Blah, blah, blah".
I am still very interested and was thinking if I could see the changeover process in writing, maybe I could read it and re-read it to see all that is involved. Parts, cost estimate, location of the parts I will need, etc.
Anyone interested in taking a stab at this for me?
He has no clue in what he was telling you. Changing gear ratios can really wake up a C4, but his numbers don't even relate to rear end ratios. Yours is an automatic???? Do you know your RPO codes?

It is an automatic, and I do not have the RPO codes. What I do have are the original plastic cards that came with the car when it was new. Could they be on that?
Jack rear of car, support car safely , put trans in N ,put mark on tire and the driveshaft .
Turn wheel once and count how many times the DS rotates
That is your diff ratio
2 and 3/4 turns = 2.73
3 and a bit = 3.07
Unless someone has removed it, there should be a stamped metal tag attached to the differential fill plug (on the right side). The tag will tell you the gear ratio.
There is a ton of info here about this topic..I've read ALL of it..if you have a 2 series rear, then going to 3.07 will wake it up and be tolerable on the highway..3.45 or higher will really wake it up, tire spin, etc, and be really buzzing at highway speeds..depend on what you want and can stand..
I'm thinking of going to 3.07 as I like highway driving..and if its not enough I could always change gears..If you have the 2 series carrier I would find a 3 series carrier and have it rebuilt. They do make special gears to put 3 series gears in a 2 series carrier but its not an ideal swap..also need to replace the speedometer gears to correct for the change..figure about $1000.00 to have all this done...I'm doing it next year...
I've been running 3:73 in my 93 for 6+ years but do still have the 2:58.
I would only go back to stock if gas hit $5. but Probably not even then.
