On my 84, the fan sensor is right behind the dipstick (towards the passenger compartment). I'm not sure about your 86. I do know the fan relay is right in front of the battery, by the brake booster. Lots of cooloing fan threads currently on the forum with some good info.
The main fan is turned on by the ECM when the coolant temp sender says the coolant temp is 228F and higher. This temp sensor is on the right front of the engine just below the MAF inlet. The temp sender that operates only the dash temp gauge is on the right side of the block between cylinders 6 & 8. There is a temperature controlled switch that turns on the auxilliary fan only and it is located on the left side of the block between cylinders 1 & 3.
my book says the cooling fan relay is on the left side of the engine by the brake booster, underneath the master cylinder, fusible links are behind the battery
