My father purchased a 1993 LT-1 in January. As it continues to get warmer here in Texas, he is getting concerned about how warm his coolant gets. His fans don't kick on until the temp hits 230, or so, and he has seen it get as high as 250 before it comes back down.
Is this anything for him to worry about? If he gets stuck in traffic, will he overheat? Should he mess with a cooler thermostat? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Re: **Engine Coolant Temperature Questions... (omrossi)
Well, it's starting to get hot here in California, and yesterday my coolant got to a HIGH of 195º. Most of the time it was at 170º. Of course I have an L98/87 Corvette, so I really couldn't be much help to you, in other than saying:
Clean Radiator good(take it out and clean the cavity)
Add a 160º Thermostat
Add a bottle of Water Wetter
Get a chip burned that will turn the fans on at 180º.
Re: **Engine Coolant Temperature Questions... (omrossi)
The fans should be coming on sooner than 230'F.
Not sure about that year,.. one fan should be ECM controlled, the other would be sensor (switch) controlled. Typically (stock) the sensor one comes on @ 220'F, and the ECM is 200'F. Look for a bad fan relay, blown fuse, or bad wire.
Don't get confused, running hot and fan ON temp are 2 different things.

fans should come on at about 225 F, if you have an aux fan, it should come on at 230-235 or so
same recommendation for you as for L98s: 160 thermo, Bottle of Water Wetter, clean the front of your radiator off, get a chip made to turn your fans on earlier.
