Default Dana 44?

What year/make Dana 44, torque arm, drive shaft will fit in my car? (92 auto) From some research in the forum, I would assume all C4’s, including ZR1’s will fit. Is this correct? Is there anything else?

I have never swapped one out, but my understanding is at the very least you need the zf6 driveshaft and need to swap the yoke from your old driveshaft as the tranny tails are different.

Other details will need to be provided by others.

Good luck

Quasar,
For proper fit you will need a manual tranny driveshaft and torque arm. When I did my swap I did some home work at the local boneyard. It looks to me that the older manual 4+3 torque arms and driveshafts are the same length as the newer 6-speed counterparts. I wound up with a 6-speed torque arm and a 4+3 driveshaft. All thats needed regarding the driveshaft is the swap of your auto driveshaft slip yoke onto the manual tranny driveshaft. FWIW, the auto driveshaft is about a half inch longer than a manual driveshaft. The auto torque arm is about an inch longer. The auto driveshaft and torque member have been used before in the Dana 44 swap but 2 issues have arisen. 1) With the auto driveshaft being longer it provides little if any movement for the slip yoke to move in and out under chassis/frame flexing/load. 2) With the auto torque arm being longer a solution has been to drill new holes in it for mounting to the Dana44. Thats OK if someone wants to take the time to do it but I question the integrity of the torque arm after its had 2 more large holes drilled in it in close proximity to the original 2 holes drilled by the factory.
After purchasing a Dana44 (w/ 3.33's) froma fellow forum member I was able to obtain the manual parts for only $95 locally and finished the project with everything properly lining up...

:)

Thanks Bill,

That was the information I was looking for.

I am going to do the swap, I’m not sure when, in the process of collecting all of the parts I will need now.

My car is getting real boring to drive and I feel it needs at least 100 more hp, upgrades on the suspension, new gears, and torque converter.

I don’t want this to turn into another Camaro thing and turn into a total racecar.

I am becoming concerned about all of the rice around me. It is getting out of control and I need to fry some of it.

I have a Dana44 w/3.45s for sale here http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=309942

Comes with the differential, yokes, and rear "batwing" cover.

You have two options after that:
1. Shorten the auto driveshaft($50) or purchase a manual driveshaft and reuse your auto yoke. Also drill two new holes in the auto driveshaft support.
2. Purchase the driveshaft and support beam from a scrap yard for ~100

I bought the unit to do option 1 but sold the car and ended up with a stick so the parts are no longer needed.

Please check it out and see if that will work for you

To be honest I would rather not ship it since it is so big and heavy. It would probably require a freight shipment and I wouldn't even know where to get that done. Plus it would be rather costly to do so

I checked out driving times and it would take me over 12 hours to get there. Too far for me. (And my truck gets 8 mpg) I like the mileage on the unit though. I don't think shipping would be too much. How long have you been trying to sell it?

Only a couple days.

I will check out how much it is to ship for curiousity. My guess is somewhere around $100
