This is a stock 94 6speed. Have a Spec stage 1 clutch with an extra mass flywheel. Both installed about 8 months ago. Car is driven daily very mildly, one trip to a road course one trip to the drags, that was it for heavy use. The damn thing is rattling when the cluth is fully depressed. Spec says it is is the clutch fork. A very good high performance mechanic friend when he listened to it says it sounds like the presure plate is bad! Before the Spec I had a Carolina Clutch installed thow out bearing broke under normal use under six months. The car has 84000 normal driving miles. Will let you know what we find when we do open up the car. I am hearing that all these after market clutch setups just are not reliable. Time to go automatic?? Anyone car to comment?
You have any teenage still living with you that have access to the keys?
Just kidding, that would be frustrating! I went back and forth trying to decide wether to go stick or automatic, glad I got an automatic for crusing around!
Nice car, same color as mine. No, no teens. My oldest son is a Ford diesel tech has a 2012, 5.0 mustang over 465hp. The other one is into high rise jeeps and the Marines. I just like the sport car stick concept. So I have always driven stick Vettes. Thanks for you input.
How many easy street miles before the heavy use? They do need broke in.
Is your throwout bearing new? Where did you get it?
Clutches/Flywheel/Pressure Plate shouldn't rattle with the clutch depressed a bad throw out bearing would make noise.
If you got it from basically anywhere its going to be made in china junk. The only good ones are NOS or the one you took out. A OEM bearing with 75K is often times better than a brand new made in china bearing.
crankshaft end play is often overlooked; its generally not an issue with automatics but everytime the clutch is depressed, the thrust bearing gets loaded uo too. It's especially hard on the thrust surfaces during start up when the thrust surfaces have yet to receive oil. pry the flywheel fore and aft, see if the measured amount of movement is anywhere near spec. If it's excessive, no clutch is going to give satisfactory service.
Thanks very much for you help. The original clutch went for about 75000 miles. Put a Carolina Clutch in, and just like you said the throw out bearing broke. The outer ring on it just let go. I stayed with the original fly wheel on that clutch install. So now the third clutch set including the throw out bearing are Spec Stage one with the extra mass flywheel. The only heavy use this clutch has seen is one road course event. No drags. Spun the wheels once on the street, that's it. I'm an old fart, don't drive the car hard.
Will check the flywheel movement when we open it up.
If it is the fork, I can understand that, it's original. Not sure what would bend or alter it thought. However, I'm just concerned it maybe the presure plate. If so that will **** me off.
Try to engage the clutch with mimimal pedal depression to avoid rattle, not working. Sound getting louder.
The history of the throw out bearing break with the Carolina clutch happened on the highway. Depressed the clutch and bang! It just let the pedal go flat to the floor. And it was a broken throw out bearing.
Now I have this rattle when attempting to change gears. So I'm thinking fork or presure plate.
