Hi everyone. I was driving my 96 coupe today and on the freeway, when I stepped on the gas, instead of the tranny kicking down, the car started bucking and then the tranny kicked down. I was thinking, oh no not the tranny or could I be running out of gas. I pulled to the slow lane in case the car conked out, and it did. The bad thing was that there was no shoulder to park at because of construction. There I was, sitting in my car blocking a lane during rush hour. Called the highway patrol. The officer pushed me off the freeway. In California, the highway patrol partners with another agency that will provide a free gallon of gas, tow you, fix a flat or change a tire, and jump start your car. The guy with the tow truck came and gave me a free gallon of gas. I went to start the car and it just cranked. I tried again and it fired up.
I'm hoping someone can really be sure if it's the "fuel sending unit" problem. I know that the digital gas gauge can give a false reading. The fuel gauge had been reading half a tank when the car died. My question is mainly, when I put in 5 more gallons of gas, I expected the gas gauge to either go down to the actual amount or stay the same because 5 gallons isn't over the halfway mark. However, the gauge went up to full. Will a dirty unit send a reading that starts from the false reading? I hope no one is too confused with my question.
