Default Wandering mirror

Here's something I've been putting up with for a while but haven't had time to dig into--maybe someone here has seen this before:

The driver side electrically adjustable mirror seems to reset to some default (and unwanted) position occasionally when I turn off the ignition. It doesn't happen every time--maybe once every other day--but I'll shut it off to run into a store or something for a few minutes and when I come back out, the mirror is in some other position than when I left it.

It's not happening when I'm driving--I've done trips of hundreds of miles with it perfectly intact.

I've never been able to catch it in the act--I'll try dozens of times to shut off the ignition and stare at it, but no luck.

It's not caused by people bumping into it--I've had it happened when no one could have been around to touch it.

It's not just dropping down (for example, if whatever mechanism holds it isn't "gripping" properly). In fact, it appears to be pretty much centered except just a bit high for where I want it.

I haven't had either the mirror or the driver side door apart to study the internals. Any opinion here before I dig into it?

im just venturing a guess here, but do you shut the door pretty hard? maybe when you shut it, it jars the mirror and causes it to move. the motors don't work in my '89 but the mirrors will be out of place every once and a while, i just always thought it was from shutting the door

just my $.02

Especially if the window is down, I was surprised how air tight my old vette was...shut my door a little too hard and bam, mirror moved

99% of the time this is caused by a loose motor mounting bracket inside the mirror. The mirror moves when you close the door. Pull the glass off (pull firmly -- it's pretty solid) and check out the inside.

Here's a thread with lots of pictures on how to fix it:

I'm going to go ahead and check the motor mounting bracket inside the mirror, as recommended, but I'll have to say that it very well may be me being too rough with the door.

I hadn't even thought about this--my mind immediately jumped to electrical problems--but it makes complete sense since it only happens after I've exited and then reentered the vehicle and not when I simply turn the key off. I'll certainly look at the mounting bracket, but it looks like I might just need to use some TLC.

Mine would move at random times, sometimes weeks apart. It seemed to happen most often when I slammed the door really hard. The driver's door has always been hard to close from day 1, so sometimes I have to really slam it (especially if the windows are up).

The motor bracket was loose. It doesn't move now.
