but yeah, I pulled off the valve body so I could reinstall the solenoid. I knew about the ball behind that.
When I got the valve body free, I heard metal hitting the floor and there was a check ball on the ground... I then got under the car to get my ratchet and noticed another check ball lying on the ground under the tranny.

one goes behind the solenoid on the valve body
one goes above the spring on the valve body
where's the third?
The 3rd goes directly across to the other side of the valve body away from the ball check with spring under it. Look at the VB plate, there may be some witness marks on it showing where the ball was hitting it.

USCGC Westwind 62-64
there are alot of little holes in it.
got pics by chance?

No real good picture, look up into the case and see if you can see any polished aea's where the ball is riding. Try claning the case with some brake clean, did you see any marks on the metal plate.
In WVZR's attachment, review comments in 23 through 26. The unit has 3 ball checks, one under the solenoid and two more that are illustrated in the attachment provided by WVZR.
23 says to Install checkball into valve body (solenoid?)
25 says to install second checkball on separator plate (above spring)
26 says to install spring.

no mention of a third check ball.
The 3rd is already assembled behind the solenoid which is attached to the valve body, now focus on the 2 that are mentioned in the article. I believe one goes up into the case with the spring, and one goes between the valve body and the case (between this you have a gasket, plate, gasket). The article shows the case upside down, your working looking up.
Good, now the last ball goes up into the overdrive case, hold it in place with vaseline or trans gel. You will now have one ball above the separator plate and one below the plate.
oh... so there are essentially two ***** above the spring (one in the valve body, the other in the case)
yes, the one that goes up into the overdrive unit/case is in the area where the throttle valve lever is bolted to the case. It's the larger hole. The other which you have marked in red is in the valve body. Drop the spring in the valve body, then the ball, lay a gasket on the valve body, spacer, gasket, raise it all up and bolt it up, 6-8 ft lbs torque.
