Default 700r4 tv cable

I'm still struggling with my '88 automatic. I bought a new cable because I had about 3/4" of excess cable past the throttle lever even with the adjustment all the way to the firewall direction. Looking up at the transmission from the floor. I could not even see the transmission end of the tv cable. Apparently the exhaust has to come down to change the cable? Could the cable have stretched that far through the years? I figured I was ski-rood any way so I cut the permanent terminal off the end of the cable at the throttle linkage and took the slack out of the cable with a crimp-on cable terminal. Just got back from a test drive and I have normal shifting and "passing gear" again!
I realize this is probably a temporary fix, but does it confirm the stretched cable theory? Also, how tough is it to drop the exhaust down? Thanks, guys and ladies....... dd

Yeah, I'd say you've come up with as good of a "fix" as anyone...

The cable does indeed stretch and add some lenght to the wire. I did the same thing, cut off 1/2" and used a crimp on end from a cable stop/ferrel kit to make the new end. I could have even soldered the end if I wasn't so damn lazy...

But, you're right about the far end. This is one of those "any way ya can " kinda deals. If dropping the exhaust gives enough access...thats your route. I'm sure there are other methods of reaching the trans end of the cable but I don;t know of one. The only time I've ever seen the cable changed was when the trans was on the floor already.
I can tell you that sometimes the route of the cable can add or absorb some length. The more bends it has the more slack it uses, so you may not necessarily have one thats stretched that far, it might be just a more direct route so it now has more slack. Either way, as long as it will adjust properly, call it good.

Default why are vettes so hard to work on?

Hi Lee. Thanks for the encouragemant. How long ago did you do your "farmer fix" ? I'm sure I will have to replace the cable, just want to put it off if I can.....
Are you old enough to remember when cars had floorboard plates? Lift the carpet. take some screws out and remove the metal access plates and there was your transmission and driveline! My 46 Ford woody had those and were used a time or two to "lose" beer cans if me and the boys were about to be stopped by a police officer. dd

You have to remove the front exhaust Y pipe to get to the TV cable attachment point on the transmission.

The shop manual says the TV cable has to go around the outside of the trans dip stick tube. Not sure why, but that's the way I routed it.
