Default Timing Mark Question

Ok I am going to set up the timing chain on my ' 88 L-98 at 12:00 crank and 12:00 Cam, but why is this engine different than every other small block since 1955?

CompCams lists cams from 1955 through 1998 in their catalog so I dont think its the cam, is it that the crank changed with the one piece rear seal?

I just want to be sure before I button up my timing chain cover that this is right given that I am using a CompCams cam and timing chain. BTW CompCams says to set it up at 12 crank and 6 cam, but the guy on the phone didnt give me a warm fuzzy feeling that he knew what he was talking about.

Did you note where the marks were before you pulled the stock timing gears?

One way is to put the balancer at +6deg with #1 int/exh closed and note where the marks are on the gears.

Thanks for the idea, anyone else have some thoughts on why this is different?
