How do I clear a stored code in my 96 LT4?? More to the point I unhooked the battery today for about 40 minutes! When I got back in it this evening and started it the LTPWS light came on without me ever moving the vehicle at all!! I believe this would be a stored code causing this but since I don't have the FSM for the care yet I don't know why this is on without the car being moved. Any help at all is greatly appreciated!! A little background info. When new tires were put on(before I bought the car) the rear rims were swapped side to side. I had them installed correctly yesterday. The LTPWS light has been coming on since I bought the car! I would like to clear this code to see if it was a rim reversal or a sensor causing the light to come on?????
I actually didn't unhook it to clear codes. I unhooked it to move it so I could find the clutch master cylinder gasket that fell behind it!! What scan tool is affordable and works????
A scan tool is the best way to read and clear codes. How much you spend depends on how much info you want.
I would guess this about your tire pressure light. That when the rims were swapped, the sensors were reading for the wrong wheel. As I understand, this causes the code. Then, when you had the rims swapped back, they left sensors where they were? Thus the sensors are still on the incorrect wheel? Just a thought.
Where are the LTPWS sensors located on a 96???? I thought they were in the wheel???
Sensors are located in the wheels drop well. They are attached by large adel type clamps & are opposite the valve stem, if installed correctly.
They are not wheel specific. Each sensor is color coded. When the car was new each wheel had a decal with a number, 1 or 2 , for each side & that's how you kept track of their location. IIRC, sensor's can be on any wheel, but the problem with that is you don't know where the sensor that's giving the problem is located, hence the decals.
You can determine which sensor is busted by grounding pin's 5 to 6 on the DLC. It's then necessary to count the flashes to get the proper i.d. You can clear the codes by grounding pins 5 to 6 3 times within 10 secs.
No sir! I am not!! I know 4 to 4 top and bottom allows access but have been scared to try it!! We are talking about a 96?? I know they are a little different!!!

The web site below will give you some insight as to how the on board computer works. Retrieving codes for LPTWS is the same. A little practice & you'll get it quickly. After you extract the code you'll have to locate the bad sensor.
I'll send you a PM with the sensor info. If you 96 has larger tire on the rear ti shouldn't be too hard to locate which sensor is where. If their the same size on all wheels as my ZO7 then it may take a little investigating.

Here's a copy of the location of the sensors. Forget the pm.
