Default 84 C4 brake issue.

Anyone out there with an 84 that has flintstone brakes? Pedal appears to be stiffer than normal. Car is stock as of now, and there doesn't appear to be any mechanical issues from what I can see other than the hard pedal and extra effort needed to stop. Any info will be very helpful.

Sounds like a ruptured diaphragm in the vacuum booster. The booster housing could be cracked. It usually cracks on the side nearest the exhaust pipe. I've had both happen to me.

My latest issue with the brakes (it looks rough because it was damaged in a fire I had last year and finally broke 6 months later):

It does sound like the brake booster. Often the diaphram will deteriorate. It is not visible from the outside, but won't hold a vacuum. You can test your booster by applying vacuum with a Mytivac and see if it holds.

The brake systems in the 84's are just plain bad to begin with. The master cylinders are prone to failing in quite a few ways. It's possible you could have air in the line to either the front or the back and be working off brakes on one end of the car. Pedal wont go to the floor but you will have to push much harder to stop. Try changing the brake fluid and bleeding the system. Another option for better braking without spending a ton of money on an aftermarket brake system is to look up an oem brake system (not sure what year they started this, maybee someone else knows) option was only available to option z51 manual trans cars. 17 in wheels thicker front rotors and dual piston front calipers. Much better stoping power than the single piston calipers you have on there now.
