Default Transmission Help Please

Just a little history.

My 87 coupe grenaded its dana 36 rear after about 3200 passes down the 1/4 mile.

The new rear I put in is a dana 44. With help from this forum I modified my dana 36 C-beam because my dana 44 purchase didn't include the C-beam. Everything worked beautifully...... for about a 1/4 mile. Turns out my automatic transmission was on its death bed and it died.

I had access to a transmission out of a 89 Iroc Z28 Camaro. I asked around and everybody said it would work as a replacement. The only thing that I would need to do is replace the tail housing with the one off of my Vette trans.

OK, history is over.

I just swapped the transmissions today. 2 problems.

1. The tail shaft is 3/4" longer on the Z28 trans. Made for a TIGHT fit but we got it on.
Do the driveshafts have a tapered receiving end that fits onto the tail shaft???

2. When we bolted the C-beam back on it was 1/2 too long and the holes at the rear would not line up.
Did i miss something? I checked that the filter was the same on the two vehicles. I used the pan from my Vette trans. The flange thickness at the engine attachment was the same. And the distance from the tail shaft joint to the pan is the same.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

WOW what horsepower are you pushing thru it ?
I have blown t700 trans and twisted half shafts but my D36 has put up with my blown 350 and now 383 with a monster torque band.
However i have had to fix oil leaks from the diff moving slightly on the bat wing and am thinking of some nice dowel pins and matching recesses to help keep it together.

I suppose it depends you may have a full manual valve body for drag racing and neck breaking shifts to do that damage?

People have re drilled bolt holes in their c beam to fit different transmissions that i have come across on this forum.

As for the tail shaft you will need the correct size made or yours shortened, but with a lot of h/p you may want to upgrade to a steel drive shaft instead of the aluminum (as i have done to my half shafts)

Good luck good to see a hi power vette on the drag strip

I didn't have to cut my output shaft ( still had some free play on the DS yoke into the trans ) but most on here have had to trim off the extra 3/4" you mention
So long as the yoke is not bottomed out on the output shaft you should be fine because with IRS you don't need the yoke movement that you do with a sprung diff

Something is out of wack.
All T700 /4L60 main casings are the same dimension; only the tailshaft housing length and style varied depending on the app
Have you got engine at right angle height?
I always bolt the beam to the diff first then raise / lower the rear of trans until the C beam bolts are a slip in fit on the trans

I did the same thing that you did with with the C-beam. AND how your DS is installed is how I EXPECTED mine to be installed. Prior to removing the damaged trans there was 1 1/8" of clearance to the tail housing. When we reinstalled the DS onto the Z28 trans I had 1 1/4" of clearance! There is 4" of clearance inside the DS. Test fitting the DS on the broken trans we could only get it 2 7/8" on to the output shaft. We cleaned the inside of the DS and with a little force we were able to get on an additional 1/4". That's why I asked if the inside of the DS is tapered. As it sits now I have 1" of clearance between the DS and the tail housing, not 1/8" like you have shown!

WE did it the other way and bolted the trans first. I guess that will be my next step. THANKS!

It's a stock 87, 353fp of torque & 215hp at the wheels I launch at 1200 rpms with drag radials.

Looking over my data on all my passes, and noting how difficult it was to predict a dial # ( other people with stock cars were WAY more consistent than my car) I think my transmission was not in good shape when I bought the car 50,000 miles ago.

My guess it slipped alittle at the last launch then grabbed..........BANG!

I've used non Corvette 700r4s and am now running a non Corvette 4l60e. I cut 3/4" off the tailshaft with a cutoff wheel. The length of the trannies are all the same as long as you aren't using one off a 4x4. I haven't found the need for a steel tailshaft and am seeing 1.39 60".

Rodj, Thank you soo much!!!!

Removed the bolts from the front of the C-beam, and put the bolts on the rear of the C-beam first. THEN put the front bolts on, adjusted the trans height and everything lined up perfectly!!! Got the correct clearance at the top and side of the C-beam and torqued all 4 bolts! The car works perfectly now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again!
