I noticed that there are times when I get done driving and my brake lights are on when I leave the car. I freely admit that I don't know the INS and outs of the car, but, I doubt the brake lights are courtesy lighting.
If I mess with the brake pedal, they do turn off.
How do I go about tightening the brake pedal... It's not very loose to begin with, however.
It may be a faulty switch or the pedal is not returning to the off position.
You can take the under dash cover off and have a look. The switch can be disconnected and pulled out for checking (after disconnecting your negative battery terminal at the battery). If the switch is OK (check with ohm meter) then it may be that the pedal needs to be adjusted higher. Apparently (according to the Haynes manual) this can be done via pushrod adjustment going into the brake power booster.
