From what I'd seen Scorp post a time or two...'85 and later manual cars(to '96) we're fitted with a dana 44. '84s both had a d36.

No Prob..

Do a search in the archives. the 44 is considerably LARGER than that puny 36. There was a post here showing the two in comparison. I think the 36 has a 7" ring gear  All C4's should have had a 44.

This is what I always heard too. However, when I was looking for a 3.07 Dana 44 for my '92 A4, from the phone description from two wrecking yards, there were two different '85's with standard transmissions and Dana 36 in them. I didn't see them personally.

What you guys are not taking into consideration is where the car has been before.
I sold a totaled 86 4+3 car to a friend who wanted it for the engine and trans only. I pulled the D44 out of it and installed a D36 to keep it rolling.
He pulled the engine and trans, and sold the car, but he left the 4+3 shifter in it.
So lets say this car found its way to a boneyard. The boneyard would just assume since it was a 4+3 car, it must have a D44 in it. And lets say he didn't know the physical differences between the two, he pulls it, and sells the D36 as a D44. The customer gets PO'd because it's a D36.
OR,
He looks under the car, and sees a D36 in a 4+3 car, this starts the false rumor that 86 4+3 cars came with a D36.
You are not going to know what's in it without seeing it for yourself, or the boneyard knowing the difference between a 36 and a 44.
I'd say it's worth the ride to see it yourself.
I'm not sure about the 84 manual cars having a D44, but I am positive all 85 to 96 manual cars came with a D44 from the factory.

Joe
