I can't seem to figure out this problem. I have replaced the maf, four times in the past three months. I have checked the burn off module (85) it seems to be functioning correctly, i think. It gives 5.7 v to the maf after i shut it down for about 5 seconds. I did have a bad fusible link, the one that goes to the ecm, replaced. I keep getting a code 33. Could the ecm have been damaged when the fusible link blew? Also my fans won't work unless i put the ground bypass into the green/white wire on the relay, but that just lets the main fan run while the ignition is on, the auxilalry fan still won't come on. I mention this other problem because doesnt the ecm control the fans? Or is it the prom that controls the fan? Should I go out and get another ecm and prom? I dont have any diagnostic software, or an auto xray(the xray wont work on my 85, been there done that). Anybody have an extra prom that will work on an 85? I think the ecm was only ~90 bucks for a reman. The cars runs and drives, but bogs, and you can see its running too rich by the black smoke coming from the exhaust. It clears up for a little while when I put another maf on, but the code still appears. Then its back to running rich within a few days, depending on how much i drive it. Anybody that has a clue?
Re: running too rich..........again (want2drivemy85)
It's basic, but have you changed out the oxygen sensor. Don't forget to check the plug connector...mine was brittle and didn't make good contact..rewired it and it's somewhat better now..just not quite right...I may have to do the MAF thing too.
HTH
yeah, i replaced that. I've replaced everything(sensors) except the knock and esc. I also ported my intake when I switched back to FI from carb. Would that have any bearing??
Re: running too rich..........again (want2drivemy85)
I have a few ideas......
A) I've heard a clogged exhaust can cause the computer to richen the mixture (example, clogged cat.)
B) Yes, your ecm does control the fans (well, my 89 does), and if one part of it is fried, there's no telling how much damage was done that could cause it to run rich.
C) The wiring on my oxygen sensor was bad as well, fixed some quirks in my car when I redid it.
D) Clogged injectors can cause your ecm to "guess" at a mixture.....but w/ your fan problem I really think that sounds like the ecm.....or just bad wiring all around (sensors)
Good luck, man. :)
A) check my sig for my cat modification ;) This problem caused it!
B)true, hopeing that this might be it, or part of it.
C)O2 replaced
D)Brand New 24# Ford Racing
I'm up to about 4 grand into this car or so. Should be expected though, I only paid 1800 for it. I've asked alot of questions on this board concernig getting this ole 85 up and running correctly, and have recieved many good responses. Keep 'em coming guys (and gals)! Thanks Whiskey
