Default Ignition Coil

Hello all, just when I thought I had my car running something else is now happening. I have blow 3 ingnition coils in a row. After I put the igntion coil in I can start the car, it's a little rough of a start but she starts. The car will not accelerate as it should. I can't even spin tires. After a few more starts the car will run like absolute crap, cant get over 20mph and the igniton coil burns up then I really can't start it.

This is a 1990, to date I have put on myslef: flowmaster exhaust (muffler guy did that) brakes, distributor, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel sending unit, fuel pump, fuel filter, injectors, ignition control module. I had the timeing checked too. The frustration is starting to kick in, if anyone can help please write back. Thank you, Ryan --Cape Coral, FL

First, pull your ALDL codes and see what you find if anything.

Next check the coil. ignition control module and pick-up coil. See the attached How To write-up.

Let us know what you discover....

Ok so I tried the above and everything check out. I added new plugs too. The old one didn't seem to bad. I was asking advice around town and someone told me it is possible that I could be sucking air around the down tubes. He said start the car, take some carb cleaner and spray it in spots on the intakes and see if the car revs a little, if so I likely have a leak. I will try this in the mornign and get back on here to report.

From now on, state what year vette you are asking help for, all C4's are not made alike!
Air leaks cannot burn out an ignition coil but a defective spark module can. The ignition coil is pulsed to make a spark and if the primary winding on the ignition coil gets constant 12v it can overheat and burn up.

My vette is a 1990. Sorry, I did write the year in the intial post. Is there any other way that the spark module would be getting constant 12v other than being defective? Thanks, Ryan

The only way the ign coil can receive 12v constantly with a good spark module would be to bypass the spark module with a 12v wire and the ign coil primary wire touching.

Ok I fixed the problem. After fighting with this MFR its finally running like a 1990 vette should. I've been through this car all the way up to replaceing the valve cover gaskets. First issue was I was not putting in the metal ground strap in the distributor cap where the ignition coil sits, that cured the buring of the coil. Next to figure out the hard starts and why I couldn't get anything on accleration....I went back to the fuel sending unit which I replaced that I bought from Ecklers. I replaced it because my fuel gauge was not working. I also put in a new bosch fuel pump. So I took out the fuel sending unit and took off the small piece of gas hose they gave me to connect the fuel pump to the the unit. I replaced it with the originol piece from my orignial fuel sending unit which is a lot bigger and has a little rusty metal on it. I also replaced a small piece of fuel hose which connects to the bottom left nipple on the top of the fuel sending unit (this is external next to where your gas fill is(after you take off the ****** rubber boot). You have 3 nipples there where rubber gas hose connects too, but the bottom left one is the one I replaced is it was crappy looking. Since I've been through this damn car as much as I have I am willing to help as much as I can, just PM me or email at ryanfive@gmail.com. I will post some photos of my car asap. THIS IS A 1990 COUPE. STEEL BLUE METALIC.

THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED, RYAN. CAPE CORAL, FL
